Insights from TAUS: AI, Machine Learning & Future-Proofed Translators

I was fortunate enough to be one of the 130 participants of the TAUS Global Content Conference in June of 2019, (and the only freelance translator). The two days that followed were full of networking, knowledge sharing, and inspirational speeches. TAUS Global Content Conference focuses on big questions such as how far machine translation (MT) has come, whether human parity is possible, how machine learning (ML) will impact global communication, and of course, what the rise of technology means for freelance translators.

What follows is my summary of the event and how what I learned can affect translators around the world. For more information, click here to read the footnotes for 2019’s TAUS Global Content Conference.

Lesson One: Neural Machine Translation (NML) Will Fundamentally Alter the Translation Process

Though we’ve had to deal with the rise of CAT and other early MT tools, most of these left the basic tenets of translation untouched. Jobs were still priced on a per-word basis and the translator was the only link between the source and final content. In short, the flowchart of a freelance translator’s tasks looked much the same as it did twenty or thirty years ago. Nowadays though, that’s no longer the case. Below are a few ways that upcoming technologies will permanently alter the translation process:

  • Pricing on a per word basis is no longer practical: Instead the rates and payments may work better using hourly fees or project based fees.
  • You’re more likely to serve as a proofreader than a translator for some jobs: While people might not be willing to pay a high-end translator to do the grunt work, they’re still open to bringing you on for an editing role.
  • Your next project manager might be an algorithm: With automatically generated content where deadlines and algorithms drive decisions, the need for dedicated project managers will shrink. The data generated from algorithms will then be used to drive recruitment, predict market readiness, and determine translation needs. In other words, a computer could one day be your boss.
  • Multimedia translation is the future: With VR and AR on the rise, the need for translators willing to adapt to these new technologies will increase. Translators who are willing to embrace these different platforms, including voice-assisted search, will benefit from our early adaptation.

Lesson Two: The Proper Application of MT and AI in Your Workflow Can Set You Apart from Your Competition

As language specialists, we tend to think of MT and AI as the monster under our bed. But if we are willing to embrace these monsters we can use them to our advantages. Having a good MT on hand can help cut costs and drastically increase our production ability, at least if we know how and when to use it.

Lesson Three: Find Your Niche to Future Proof Your Business

John Tinsley of Iconic Translation Machines opened with a startling statistic: ”99% of today’s global content is translated by MT without any human intervention.“ Hearing numbers like that is enough to leave most translators waking up in a cold sweat. I’m not one of them. My research shows that there’s plenty of room for both machine and human translators in the marketplace. In fact, experts estimate the employment outlook for translators and interpreters will increase 29% by 2024. Of course many of you are probably wondering what you can do to ensure you’re positioned for growth.

Generalists and low-quality content mills will be the main casualties in this battle of man versus machine. To succeed in the future, you’ll need to specialize in a field that values accuracy and creativity over speed and volume. Examples of these fields include medical oncology research, renewable energy development, and automotive patent law as well as more creative fields such as marketing. Transcreators, because of their ability to merge copywriting with nuance and emotion, will also be immune to the rising tide of automation.

There is also a new field of specialization to pay attention to. International companies are hungry for freelance translators with experience in digital marketing and social media. They need people who understand local search and can adjust their messaging to meet the needs of customers and search engines alike. Even if an oncology degree is out of reach, the internet is awash with knowledge about customer service, search engine optimization, and social media management.

Lesson Four: There’s a New Translation Business Model on the Rise

Up until a few years ago, translators came in two main stripes: those who collaborated directly with clients and those who worked for language service providers. Many freelance translators make a living straddling the line between the two. These two different ways of working demand different technologies, processes, and timelines. Now, many translators will be forced to contend with a third translation model: crowdsourcing.

In this model, popularized by platforms such as Smartcat and Gengo, end-clients plug their content into a virtual translator community. The platform then automates job management on both sides. By removing the geographical barriers between translator and end-client, the crowdsourcing model opens the market to lower-cost providers in markets where the cost of living is much lower. These lower costs will ultimately hurt the language service providers stuck in the middle. This new business model gives you even more reason to specialize and find your niche.

Lesson Five: Machine Learning Is Creating New Roles for Translators

If generalists and low-quality translators will lose their place in the market, new, more specialized people will take their place. In the next few years, we expect to see a sharp increase in demand for:

Post Editors of MT

While some companies don’t mind machines doing the lion’s share, they’re skittish about releasing raw machine translations into the market. Therefore, they’ll want someone to read over the outputted text for mistakes. The corrections will then be fed back into the data pipeline to further improve the machine’s output. This is a possible field for translators willing to take it on, which can even create a new type of translator.

Transcreators

Machines still struggle to combine culture, language, and emotion into a creative and compelling text. To get that done right, you need a human. Machines also have a tough time understanding cultural nuances, emotions, and the psychology involved in proper translation. All things that are vital to sales and marketing. For that reason, transcreators will weather the digital transformation just fine.

Spoken Content Specialists

Audio is being hyped as the new communication platform. Over time, text interfaces are being replaced with voice-powered assistants like Google Home and Alexa. Podcasts are also growing in popularity. This shift to audio requires a different sort of translator. Those who work in this field must find ways to convey the importance of social, gender, and emotive markers in the work that they produce. They must also be prepared to work with speakers of various dialects in order to create more localized, regionalized content.

Brand Ambassadors

With more of the world coming online, globalized branding is becoming more important. Worldwide retailers will need help ensuring that their company’s values and beliefs are effectively communicated across geographical borders. This will require translators who are willing to act as product testers and advise companies on how best to adjust their product to meet the needs of their target markets.

Local Storytellers

Good marketing is built around good narratives. Simply translating these stories in a target language rarely has the desired impact that companies want. That’s why these groups are looking for people who know how to craft a good tale. This is a perfect role for the translators who also dreamt of a career as a creative writer. And, with the demand for personalization growing, the need for this type of work will only grow.

Conversational Agent Consultants

Like it or not, chatbots are here to stay. While much of their development has happened in English-speaking countries, they’re now being deployed in markets all around the world. Still, these “conversational agents” need a human to help fine-tune and perfect them. People in this position will have to have a good understanding of human psychology, machine logic, and customer service to succeed.

Lesson Six: Machine Learning Will Give You Insight into Your Work

Translators, as connected professionals, will eventually benefit from the datafication of their work. The rise of algorithm and machine translation will make it easier for us to analyze our work habits, performance levels, and productivity. Eventually, ML could allow us to build a data narrative of our past choices and spell check preferences. It could then use that data to make suggestions to improve the overall quality of our work. With this data at our fingertips, we’ll also have a brand-new way to quantify our value to clients and potential employers.

Lesson Seven: Traditional Training Isn’t Enough

Academic training for translators usually consists of two things: translation theory and practical translation. The latter tends to focus on computer-assisted translation tools and general customer service. The former focuses more on ethics, linguistics, and sociology. The topic of MT is barely more than a footnote in these areas. The curriculum rarely makes room for the advanced algorithmic knowledge, specialized skill sets, and advanced IT tools required for the future. Until more universities adapt to this, new translators will have to turn to industry mentors and less traditional sources to help prepare them for the future of the industry.

Lesson Eight: We Need to Stop Being Afraid of MT and Step Up to Help Shape It

Machine translation tools are often built by software engineers with little to no knowledge of the industry itself. This often results in tools that are clunky, complicated, and poorly designed for the translation process. But just like we did with bilingual print dictionaries and translation memories, we have a chance to change that. We can reach out to designers and engineers and ask for things to change. Or perhaps we can join a group or become guinea pigs for the next-generation tools coming down the pipeline. Whatever you do, don’t let the advent of ML leave you voiceless. Do everything you can to make sure that the end product you use is well suited to your work.

Lesson Nine: The Need for Globalized Content Has Never Been Greater

With ML on the rise, most of us think that the need for skilled translators will decrease. That couldn’t be farther from the truth. As huge population centers become increasingly digitized, there’s now an insatiable need for translators willing to work in those markets. Furthermore, with all that big data flying around, there’s a huge need for people to translate and draw conclusions across cultural lines. In short, while machines will take away a lot of the grunt work, freelance translators will be given more opportunities to make a difference.

To summarize: translators need to up their game, focus on niche markets, use MT as a way to boost productivity, use MT as a way to provide ancillary services, and also consider adjusting their business models or pricing schemes to keep MT profitable.

Attending TAUS was an eye-opening experience, being the “linguist” among technology companies. I not only learned a lot about the present state of the industry but also gained a lot of insight into what’s coming. If we specialize and use our human powers to our advantage, we have no reason to be scared of MT and its associated impacts.

Introduction:

The battle between machine translation (MT) and human translation rages on. Every time the newcomer hits the mat, laid low by another multimillion-dollar scandal, it bounces right back. Thanks to the ever-changing world of technology, MT just keeps getting better. But, it’s not important which of the two win the fight. The true winners are the company who realize that the dichotomy is a false one. Successful companies make use of both machine and human translation. The trick is knowing when it’s time to hire a professional.

The Rise of the Machines:

Computers have come a long way in the last fifty years. A cheap smartphone can now easily do what once took a supercomputer. Technology has also found a way to trounce the world’s trivia and chess champions in unarmed combat. Remember WATSON? The power of MT has also grown by leaps and bounds. Google Translate, for example, grew the number of available languages by 800 percent between 2001 and 2017. The accuracy of MT translation has also risen drastically. One study saw a “10-point improvement to state-of-art machine translation between 2007 and 2012.”

But, the main reason companies want to gamble on MT is simple: money. With many free machine-based translators out there, businesses often see it as the easiest way to cut localization costs. But, improper translations can lead to lawsuits, mockery, and a loss of customer trust. So, at the end of the day, the potential savings rarely justify the risk.

There are also a few limitations inherent to modern MT and software:

  • It cannot determine the context and purpose of a piece
  • It’s programmed to give preference to popular words and phrases
  • It stores and learns from your information, confidential or otherwise
  • It cannot comprehend idioms or creative word use

While perfect for the one-off user, MT translation’s lack of accuracy and confidentiality makes it unsuitable for long-term business use.

When It’s Okay to Use MT

  • When you just need to understand the general meaning of a document
  • When the translations never reach end consumers
  • If the document is just going to be used internally
  • To translate large pieces of content for a human translator to improve upon

The Power of The Human Mind:

In February of 2017, Sejong Cyber University decided to test claims that modern translation algorithms had finally eclipsed human translators. Out of the three MTs tested, Google Translate did best with 46.7 percent accuracy rate. The professional human translators, on the other hand, walked away with an average score of 81.7 percent. It’s pretty obvious which one came out on top.

Companies who rely solely on professional translators do so for one reason: accuracy. They want to dazzle their customers with easy-to- read and accurate texts that truly reflect the soul of the original. Thirty to fifty an hour is more than worth the peace of mind that a human translator can bring.

When Businesses Should Rely on Professional Translators:

  • When quality matters
  • If peoples’ lives depend on the quality of the translation
  • When your documents are full of jargon and creative language
  • If the finished content goes to consumers

Conclusion

The future is a bright one for machine and human translation. As globalization trends continue to grow, the demand for accurate translation will increase. But, there’s no need for MT and professional human translators to remain at odds. There’s plenty of room for both. As one professor said, “It is likely that the human translators and interpreters will become editors who supervise and post-edited translations that AI programs created.” MT isn’t an end to the translation industry. It’s a new beginning.

How Technology Will Change Translation

Online translation tools commenced with the easily accessible Google Translate, which has now been out on the internet for 10 years, but it seems it hasn’t had that much of an impact on the demand for human translators. Most people believed that once translation tools were developed that would be an end to human translators. This doesn’t mean that machine translation is losing its momentum; it’s more the case that the two methods of translating now co-exist together.

However, the general trend in global business is for more and more businesses opening up their products to many more countries. Experience has indicated that it is of little use marketing a product to, for example, the Russian market unless at least some of the product information is written in Russian.

Terminology Banks

Some of the translation tools which are computer based help translators complete their translation tasks. A few of these are what are called ‘terminology management systems’ where useful terms are stored online in multiple languages so that the translator is only a click away when searching for the desired list of terms. These terminology banks allow translation divisions of an international organisation when allocating translation jobs to human translators that they can be assured that there is a standardisation of terms being used by a group of translators.

March of the Translation Apps

It is expected that throughout this year more apps will be released which will aid faster translations. There is a device that is currently being trialled and that is a translating earpiece. It allows people who don’t speak the same language to understand one another. This could theoretical reduce language barriers considerably.

A device developed and marketed by New York City company Waverly Labs is called ‘Pilot’ and is fitted into the ear. It has an in-built AP which is able to switch between languages. This language translation product is going to be introduced first of all in the main European languages: French, English, Spanish and Italian. The idea later is to load the device with other languages that are widespread, such as Arabic, Hindi, Slavic, Semitic and many African languages.

Pilot May Take Place of Google Translate

Apple fans love iPhone accessories so the Pilot is expected to be a winner as it has many smart language features. It works by using speech recognition so the person using one can hear and understand what another person is saying because the conversation gets translated into the user’s native language. Being what is called a wearable device it brings together this much loved feature with machine translation. It is quite possible that Apple fans will soon be deleting their Google Translate apps in favour of the Pilot iPhone app instead.

Apple is promoting the Pilot app well before the launch by giving away a free app every week. The actual launch date has yet to be decided. So far there has been unprecedented support for the product and crowd-funding is being sought to help in producing it and releasing it out on to the market.

6 Reasons Not to Use Software for Your Business Translations

In today’s global economy, business translation is a must for companies wanting to extend their reach. To help keep costs down, however, some choose to use automated translation software instead of hiring the expertise of a professional business translator. While this choice is initially less expensive, the consequences of such a shortcut can be costly. Keep reading to learn why you should not use software for your business translation needs.

 1. Translation software is never error-proof.

 In 2010, a Reuters article told the world about the underlying dangers of relying on automated software for business translations. The news story highlighted a pharmacy that used such software to translate prescription labels that were written in English into Spanish. After reviewing the results in the medical journal Pediatrics, Julia Tse and Dr. Iman Sharif pointed out several deadly errors. For example, in English, the instructions told patients to take a pill “once a day.” The translating software failed to translate the word “once” into Spanish correctly and instructed patients to take the medication 11 times per day, as the word “once” in Spanish means “eleven.” A professional business translator would never make such a mistake.

 In a separate incident, when a medical group used translating software for prostate medication labels, four prostate cancer patients in Epinal, France died because of the erroneous dosage instructions. Regardless of advances in technology, business translation software can never take the place or match the accuracy of an expert human business translator.

 2. Translation software is not sensitive to idioms.

 Language creates meaning as much as it conveys meaning. A culture in one part of the world thinks differently than the culture on the opposite end of the globe because of the ideas that differ between words and phrases. For example, the English phrase, “on the other hand,” does not mean “alternatively” in most other parts of the world.

 When brewing company Coors once tried to sell its beer in Spain, it directly translated its marketing slogan, “Turn it loose,” into Spanish. While English speakers in the U.S. understand the phrase as an encouragement to have a good time, the literal translation in Spanish relates more to the “loose” action one may encounter with diarrhea.

 3. Some words simply don’t exist in other languages.

 When a word doesn’t exist in the destination language, translation software cannot help. A business translation professional has an understanding of the culture that speaks the desired language, so he or she can accurately express the vocabulary and ideas. While an equivalent word may not exist from one language to the next, a business translator bridges the lexical gap with an appropriate phrase.

 An example of such a word is gobbledygook, which exists only in the English language. Every language has its own unique words that automated translation software cannot translate. Such a translation blunder can hinder a company’s bottom line or encourage foreign prospects to not close a deal. Professional business translation services understand these circumstances as well as the culture of the language at hand, and can provide clients with high-quality translations that aid business communications. 

 4. Automated translation software is not dialect-specific.

 In the U.S., the storage space in the back of a car is called a trunk. In the U.K, the same part of the car is called a boot. Language dialects differ around the world – and even by region. For example, some of the words used in Mexico have a different meaning in Spain. Among the 30 languages in India, there exist more than 2,000 dialects. These differences make business translation more challenging and create greater room for error when using translation software. Because business translations require specificity, a translator must know the differences among dialects to properly convey the intended meaning. Specificity and cultural knowledge are things that automated translation software lacks. 

 5. Literal translations usually don’t make sense.

 There are a few occasions when you can successfully translate a phrase into another language word-for-word. For example, the Spanish phrase “sangre azul” means “blue blood,” and both phrases refer to wealthy individuals. Most of the time, however, literal translations make no sense and confuse the true meaning. Oftentimes, idiomatic phrases are to blame. For example, when you ask someone in Costa Rica how they are, they often say, “Pura vida,” which literally means, “Pure life.” “Pura vida” in this Latin American country is a statement that expresses one is well. Outside of the Costa Rican culture, saying one has a pure life can convey a handful of different meanings.

 6. Translation software neglects sophisticated writing techniques.

 Automated translation software does not pick up on wordplay, puns and metaphors the way a human business translator can. If you use software, you run the huge risk of having your ideas get literally lost in translation, which can ultimately make you look foolish, culturally insensitive or both.
